COMMON QUESTIONS | Physio At The Beach

Q  What is physiotherapy?
A: Physiotherapy is the treatment of physical disability caused by injuries to muscles, bones and joints.
Physiotherapists are health care professionals who are specially trained to assess patients, to prescribe suitable treatment programs, to monitor progress, and to provide hands-on assistance towards the goal of patient recovery.

Q  Do I need a doctor's referral?
A: No, you do not require a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in a private clinic in Manitoba. Some insurance companies do require a doctor's referral for payment purposes. Please check with your plan provider directly to verify their requirements.

Q  What kind of physiotherapy treatment can I expect?
A: Your treatment will depend on your specific requirements. Prior to beginning any treatment, your physiotherapist will interview you, take a history, review any documentation (eg., doctor's reports,  x-rays) and finally examine you. Your assessment along with your goals will set the groundwork for the most effective course of treatment. Depending on your needs, treatment may include one or a combination of the following:

  • Manual Therapies such as mobilisation or massage
  • Therapeutic Procedures using modern equipment and methods
  • Work-Related or Sports Therapies geared to specific problems
  • Exercise Programs, Educational Programs, Orthotic Services & Acupuncture

Please voice any questions you may have regarding treatment. As always, the patient has the right to decline any treatment which he/she does not wish to receive.

Q  What should I bring to my first appointment?
A: If you are a Worker's Compensation Board (WCB) referral, bring your WCB claim number and adjustor's name with you.  If you are an Autopac client, be sure all necessary forms are completed. If you have private insurance coverage, please bring the appropriate cards and numbers with you. Allow extra time to discuss these and other methods of payment.

Q  What should I wear?
A: Comfortable leisure wear such as shorts and a t-shirt are appropriate for most treatments. Shorts & hospital gowns are available as well.

Q  How long will it take before I begin to feel better?
A: There is no specific amount of time that it takes for you to start feeling better. Typically, your rate of healing is dependent on many factors such as age, type of injury, length of time since the injury, initial care, diet and overall health. However, physiotherapy treatment will help to stimulate your body's own ability to heal itself.
